IoT Skills and Platforms
The following is the course outline with links to the materials for the IoT Skills and Platforms short course. You will be stepped through basic automation with a voice assistant, the raspberry pi and some electronics and Python coding, the Puck.JS for automation. It is expected that you are familiar with Linux and have done a little programming before. If you are unsure of your level, please take a look at the IT & IoT Fundamentals short course, which forms the assumed knowledge for this short course.
The expected student workload for this course is either 25 or 50 hours, varying with whether you opt to take the unit with assessment, which will provide 1 credit point towards a Murdoch degree.
For this course, the fees will cover the electronics, which will be yours to take home after the course is complete. The only things that we require that you bring are:
- A charged laptop to work on for the day - with a USB port and administrative or root access
- A charged smartphone (Android or OSX)
Pre-course prep
Complete the Cisco Connecting Things Reading - No requirement to complete the activities, we will do our own set face to face
Day 1
- Contactless Doorbell with If This Then That
- Amazon Alexa & IoT
- Install Raspberry Pi OS and basic networking
- Raspberry Pi and Basic Electronics
- Raspberry Pi and Sensors
Day 2
- Brilliant smart plug with IFTTT or voice assistant
- BluetoothLE on a Raspberry Pi
- Running the Raspberry Pi as a Bluetooth Peripheral
Optional Post workshop Asesssment
Produce a 10-minute video presentation video describing and documenting your IoT project. This project should clearly show how some aspect of the equipment and the skills from this course has been integrated into your home life or work.
